Hidden Caruggi

In the eyes of a foreign the alleys of Genoa’s Old Town are a tangled labyrinth. What if the names of those alleys are the keys to explore them? They can take you on a journey among  gunsmiths, catapults, distant memories of wood, rivers and vineyards.  Look carefully at the old marble plaques where exotic words still appear. Sometimes they are almost indecipherable, as if they wanted to keep the alleys’ secrets still hidden…

From an Ancient Craft to an Enchanted Creature

Walking through Genoa’s street means walk through time. Looking at the shops’ signs in Via XXV Aprile you are transported in the Belle Epoque. It is like walking among the wealthy Genoese bourgeoisie. But if you take a look at the name of the “carruggi” (Alleys) you step even back in time to the Middle Age. A time in which the area around Portello was considered a suburb. There many disreputable inns arose. Actually, Vico Testadoro and Vico del Ferro owe their name to the shop’s signs of some of those inns!
