Un viaggio tra pizzi e merletti, damaschi e broccati, alla scoperta della sobria vanità della borghesia genovese, che attraverso l’opera degli scultori del Realismo borghese celebra sé stessa offrendo uno spaccato della società del tempo. Nell’anno in cui Genova celebra l’Ottocento come epoca di grande ricchezza materiale e vivacità intellettuale ripercorriamo le storie delle famiglie che hanno immortalato sé stesse nei monumenti funebri e dei grandi personaggi che hanno visitato questo luogo, ricco di suggestiva bellezza e nostalgica umanità.

Nel corso dei secoli i genovesi sono stati ovunque, dal Medio Oriente alle Americhe, e un riflesso di questo vagabondare lo si ritraccia nella forma e negli edifici. E come potremmo fare un tour intercontinentale alla ricerca di “pezzi” di Genova sparsi un po’ ovunque, così possiamo fare un giro del mondo senza allontanarci dalla città scoprendo minareti arabeggianti, mercerie di Broadway o memorie portoghesi: storie che, come tante tessere di un mosaico, compongono il racconto di una città unica. Se si aguzza la vista si noteranno influssi francesi, modi lombardi, echi della classicità romana e persino una piccola tessera di mosaico ricavata dai cocci di un vaso persiano. Perché i genovesi, oltre a girare il mondo, non buttano via niente.

Veleni nascosti, cadaveri smembrati, indagini complicate: storie che sembrano romanzi ma che invece escono dalla cronaca dei più terribili delitti che sconvolsero Genova tra Ottocento e Novecento. Tutte queste vicende finiscono con lo scavare a fondo nella società del tempo, dandoci un’immagine inedita tanto dei bassifondi della Superba quanto dei suoi quartieri alti a tinte "noir".
